Maratha Dandpatta

The Dandpatta is a sword originated from the India; it is a combination of a long sword with a gauntlet which is integrated as a handguard. The complete blade is forged in high carbon steel with a beautiful Damascus pattern & has a flat plate type cross section. The characteristic feature of the dandpatta is its hilt which takes the form of a half-gauntlet which is decorated with brass border highlights, the inside of this handguard is padded.

The swordsman holds the weapon by gripping a crossbar inside the gauntlet & the cuff is held close to the forearm by another strong metal bar. The extended grip provided by the forearm permits powerful slashes but restricts thrusts during ground close quarter battles; but acts as a fantastic thrusting weapon from horseback, much like a lance. The weapon was generally swung in circular movement like whirlwind to maximize the casualties on the opposition. It was to be effective when two soldiers fought together as pairs. The scabbard is made for quality wood covered with decorative velvet, locket & chape.
